Story ยท Community reports and official notices

What residents report, what the city announces

When several residents in a ward report the same outage, did an official notice name that ward?

Not enough reports yet

This story will be published once there are at least 50 ward-days with several reports of the same problem, over at least 28 days. Community reports have not started yet.

How this is worked out

A ward-day counts when several separate residents reported the same problem in that ward on that day (the same rule that puts an area on our community reports page). It counts as matched when an official notice of the same kind (power, or water for water out, low pressure and burst pipes) named a place in that ward on the same day or the day before.

We only count metros and problems where we collect official notices: water notices from eThekwini, and power notices from Cape Town, Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Mangaung, Nelson Mandela Bay. Refuse and streetlight reports have no official notice source and are not counted. A ward-day without a matching notice does not mean nothing was done: a metro may announce on social media, by SMS or not at all for a small fault, and our matching only links places it can name exactly.

Community reports are anonymous and unverified, and are never used in our rankings or official figures.
